ROSSS Seismic Multi-Tier and Pallet Racking System for Marathon Distributors Distribution Centre

Client: MARATHON DISTRIBUTORS

Year: 2008

Marathon Distributors required a complete storage solution for a new distribution centre in Cyprus. The project demanded a system capable of meeting seismic safety standards while maximising vertical space utilisation and providing both pallet-level and intermediate picking areas within the same footprint.

The critical constraint was designing for seismic conditions. Cyprus lies in an active seismic zone, and any racking installation must comply with Eurocode 8 requirements for earthquake-resistant structures. Conventional storage systems would require either over-engineering at significant cost or acceptance of reduced capacity to maintain safety margins. Marathon Distributors needed a solution that delivered both compliance and density.

SPIMA specified a ROSSS seismic-rated system combining multi-tier shelving with pallet racking in a single integrated structure. The multi-tier configuration allowed creation of intermediate floors accessed by, effectively multiplying the usable storage area without expanding the building envelope. Below and alongside these platforms, seismic pallet racking provided bulk storage for palletised goods.

The ROSSS seismic range is engineered specifically for high-risk zones, incorporating reinforced uprights, enhanced base plates, and calculated beam-to-upright connections that absorb and dissipate lateral forces during ground movement. Every component is dimensioned to maintain structural integrity under the horizontal accelerations defined in the applicable seismic codes, while still offering the flexibility to reconfigure bay heights and picking levels as inventory profiles change.

By integrating both systems into a single seismic-certified structure, SPIMA eliminated the need for separate safety calculations and structural reinforcement that independent installations would require. The multi-tier levels provided high-density storage for smaller SKUs and manual picking operations, while the pallet positions handled inbound pallets and bulk reserves.

The seismic certification ensures compliance with Cyprus building standards and protects both inventory and personnel. The modular ROSSS design allows Marathon Distributors to adjust the configuration as their distribution requirements evolve, without compromising the structural integrity that seismic conditions demand.
