EFAFLEX High-Speed Transparent Door with Fire Curtain for MEDOCHEMIE PEGASUS Distribution Centre

MEDOCHEMIE PEGASUS operates pharmaceutical distribution facilities in Limassol, where maintaining controlled environments while ensuring rapid material flow and fire safety is critical. When commissioning their new high-technology distribution centre, the company required a door solution that could reconcile three competing demands: high-speed throughput to support intensive logistics operations, visual transparency for operational oversight and forklift safety, and integrated fire protection to compartmentalise the facility in compliance with pharmaceutical storage regulations.

The challenge lay in combining these requirements at a single opening. Conventional high-speed doors sacrifice fire resistance; fire-rated doors typically operate slowly and block sightlines. Pharmaceutical distribution centres handle high volumes of temperature-sensitive and controlled products, making door cycle time a constraint on throughput, while fire safety standards for such facilities prohibit compromises on compartmentalisation integrity.

SPIMA specified an EFAFLEX combination door—the first such installation in the MEDOCHEMIE PEGASUS facility. The system integrates a transparent spiral high-speed door for daily operations with a fire curtain deployed automatically in the event of alarm activation. The transparent spiral door maintains visibility across the threshold, reducing collision risk and enabling supervisory oversight of goods movement without opening the door. Motion sensors installed on both sides of the opening trigger automatic door operation, minimising cycle delays and eliminating manual intervention during peak throughput periods.

The fire curtain component provides fire resistance rating EI 60 compartmentalisation without occupying floor space or requiring a solid door leaf that would block normal operations. During standard operation, only the high-speed transparent door is active; the fire curtain remains concealed and deploys only when the fire alarm system signals a threat, maintaining the facility's fire compartmentation strategy without impeding logistics flow.

This installation demonstrated that pharmaceutical distribution environments need not choose between operational efficiency and regulatory compliance. The EFAFLEX combination door allowed MEDOCHEMIE PEGASUS to maintain the rapid access cycles required for modern pharmaceutical logistics while meeting fire safety obligations, setting a precedent for subsequent phases of the distribution centre expansion.
